Are You Giving Your Power Away To Your Haters?
This first week of the year on social media was pretty interesting. There were many people posting positive affirmations, goals, and photos. However, I noticed others who spent time shouting out, talking to, arguing with or talking about cutting off their haters, and current or former relationships. Many vowed to “succeed in 2016 in spite of their haters.” We all have haters. Even haters have haters. However, I have a few questions regarding how we deal with them.
Is addressing haters on social media a good idea or a good look for the one posting it?
Is it a waste of time talking about them if the relationship is truly over?
Is it a sign that your haters or former friends/acquaintances/significant others mean more to you than you realize or than you want to admit?
Is it a waste of energy talking about your haters when they are obviously your haters?
Should they be ignored instead of empowered?
When I come across these posts, I imagine that every time this happens “the hater” gets to see just how important they are to the one posting. I wonder if “the haters” feel a sense of satisfaction knowing that they are stealing moments of your day - moments that you could be using to uplift or empower someone who really matters to you.
Whenever I see this happening on social media, it reminds me of a classic song written by one of my favorite songwriters, Carly Simon, called “You’re So Vain.” The chorus of the song is “You’re so vain, you probably think this song is about you/ You’re so vain, I’ll bet you think this song is about you/Don’t you? Don’t you? Don’t you?
The song WAS about him and as long as we put our energy on our haters, our focus will be on THEM instead of moving forward and succeeding just for the sake of succeeding.
Proverbs 29:11 “A fool vents all of his anger: but a wise man brings himself under control.”
